Who We Are
Kids and Math is a registered not-for-profit organisation established on 21st November 2014 in Ghana, by a team of 7 high school graduates and university students.
This pioneering team opened up to accept a few more and became a solid 10 member pioneer team by late 2015. Today, Kids and Math is a thriving network of about 100 youthful volunteers from different backgrounds led by our abled Founder and Executive Director, Ms Princess Allotey. Under her steady leadership, Kids and Math has extended its reach, from serving a class of about 14 students from Childtime Preparatory School in Madina, Accra to serving 500 basic school students in Ashaiman, Navrongo, Kumasi and Koforidua in Ghana and recently, our first international extension in Senegal.
According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, Ghana’s youthful population was 40% in 2016. It is therefore important to equip the younger generation with the needed skills to further develop Ghana. This can start in the classroom. STEM/Mathematics education initiatives are important for the development of a country. However, students’ performance in Mathematics has been considerably low throughout the years. In 2017, 57.27% of WASSCE candidates had a D7 or less with 20.27% of the candidates scoring F9. In 2018, more than 61.67% of candidates had D7 or less with 31.58% scoring F9.
Ghanaian school students need to be exposed to the beauty of Mathematics at an early age so they develop a willingness to further explore it as they climb the educational ladder. Just as every math problem has a solution (and the solution can be reached using different approaches) Kids and Math adopts the practical approach to help kids realize and appreciate the versatility of Mathematics.
What We Do
Kids and Math is the first youth-led organization in Ghana that seeks to help kids realize and appreciate the versatility of Mathematics.
Our long term vision is to cause a concept change among African pupils about Mathematics, to get pupils to see Mathematics as a very practical subject that they can confront head-on and understand.
We organise special teaching sessions with our partner schools after normal class hours, where the focus is to bring out the versatility of subjects by focusing on conceptual understanding using math manipulatives, art, graphics, videos and demonstrations.
We are currently impacting basic school students in 6 communities in Ghana and Senegal!!
